Destinations & Day Trips
Cajas National Park
UNESCO biosphere reserve with approximately 270 named lakes, páramo ecosystem, and endemic wildlife including the Andean condor. Park sits at 3,150–4,450 m altitude.
Main trail: Laguna Toreadora loop: ~5 km, 2–3 hours, moderate (altitude is main challenge)
What to bring: waterproof layers, warm base layer, sun protection, sturdy shoes, and water.
Turi Viewpoint
Hilltop neighborhood south of the city with a famous viewpoint over Cuenca. Walk up from the historic center: 45–60 minutes. Taxi to top: $3–$4. Best visited late afternoon for golden light.
Baños (near Cuenca)
Small town south of Cuenca. Thermal baths, waterfalls, and scenic valleys. Popular Sunday outing.
Gualaceo + Chordeleg
Sunday textile market + silver jewelry.
Ingapirca
Best archaeological site near Cuenca.
Girón Waterfall
Impressive falls on a colonial-era road.
Vilcabamba
Small town 250 km south of Cuenca known for its microclimate, hiking options, and slower pace. Good as a 2-night weekend destination.
Cycling Routes
Primarily downhill. Pleasant half-day ride. Return by taxi with bike ($5–$8).
Mixed terrain through the Tomebamba valley. Full-day ride.
Experienced cyclists only. Road passes 4,000 m. Cold, exposed, stunning.
