Visa Rules & Length of Stay
Most nationalities — including citizens of the US, Canada, EU countries, UK, and Australia — enter Ecuador visa-free as tourists for up to 90 days. This 90-day allowance applies within a chronological year: a 365-day period beginning on the date of your first entry, not a calendar year. Your 90 days do not reset with a border run.

What You Need to Know
For Nomad Pioneers: our final big event is March 13th, 2027. If you arrive December 14th and fly out March 14th, you stay exactly within your 90-day tourist allowance — no extension needed. This is the simplest approach.
If you want to arrive earlier, stay later, or explore more of Ecuador after March 14th, you can extend your visa for an additional 90 days (up to 180 days total). The process is straightforward and can be done entirely in Cuenca.
How It Works
On arrival at Mariscal Lamar Airport (CUE), immigration stamps your passport and you receive a 90-day tourist permit (T-3) automatically. Keep your passport entry stamp — it records your chronological year start date.
If you want to stay beyond 90 days, you need to apply for a tourist visa extension (prórroga de estadía). This grants up to 90 additional days, for a maximum of 180 days within your chronological year.
The extension process works like this: between days 80–90 of your stay, you submit an application to the Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores y Movilidad Humana. You can do this in person at the immigration office in Cuenca (Av. Huayna Cápac) or use an online service like EcuaAssist to handle the paperwork remotely. The process takes approximately 5–10 business days and costs ~$150.
What you need for the extension: valid passport with at least 6 months remaining, passport-size photo, proof of financial means (bank statement showing sufficient funds), proof of accommodation in Ecuador, and the application fee (~$150). EcuaAssist or a local immigration attorney can guide you through the exact requirements, which may shift slightly year to year.
The simplest path for Nomad Pioneers: arrive December 14th, leave March 14th — exactly 90 days, zero paperwork. If you want to extend, start the process around day 80 (early March) so it's approved before your initial 90 days expire.
