Flights to Cuenca
Cuenca's Mariscal Lamar Airport (CUE) is a small regional airport. There are no direct international flights — you will always connect through a hub city. The two main gateways into Ecuador are Quito (UIO) and Guayaquil (GYE), both offering domestic connections to Cuenca. Many travelers also route through hubs like Miami, Bogotá, or Panama City.

What You Need to Know
For Nomad Pioneers (December 2026 – March 2027): the final big community event is March 13th, 2027. We recommend booking your return flight for March 14th. If you arrive December 14th and depart March 14th, you stay exactly within the 90-day tourist visa limit — no extension needed.
How It Works
All routes to Cuenca require at least one connection. The cheapest approach is to fly into Guayaquil (GYE) and then take a domestic flight to Cuenca (35 minutes, $50–$80 one-way on LATAM or Avianca) or a bus ($12, ~4 hours). Flying into Quito (UIO) works too, but the domestic connection to Cuenca costs similar while the Quito–Cuenca bus is longer (~8–10 hours).
Booking international and domestic legs separately is usually cheaper than a single through-ticket. Use Google Flights or Skyscanner for the international leg, then book the GYE–CUE or UIO–CUE hop directly on LATAM (latam.com) or Avianca (avianca.com).
The Guayaquil bus option is genuinely comfortable — modern coaches with reclining seats, AC, and sometimes Wi-Fi. If you're not in a rush, it saves $40–$70 versus flying and the scenery through the Andes is spectacular.

Miami (MIA)
The most common US hub. Direct flights to Guayaquil (GYE) on LATAM, Avianca, and JetBlue. Round trip typically $350–$550. Flight time ~4.5 hours.
Fort Lauderdale (FLL)
Budget alternative to Miami. Spirit and JetBlue fly to GYE. Round trip $280–$450 if booked early.
Bogotá (BOG)
Main hub for connections from Europe and other South American cities. Avianca and LATAM offer frequent Bogotá–Guayaquil and Bogotá–Quito flights. European travelers often find the cheapest fares routing through Bogotá. Europe–Bogotá round trip: €450–€700.
Panama City (PTY)
Copa Airlines hub with connections from across the Americas. Useful for travelers from Central America, the Caribbean, or as an alternative to Bogotá. PTY–GYE round trip: $250–$400.
Guayaquil (GYE)
Preferred gateway. Closest international airport to Cuenca. Domestic flight to CUE: 35 min, $50–$80 one-way. Alternatively, take a comfortable bus (~4 hours, $12).
Quito (UIO)
Ecuador's main international airport with the most flight options. Domestic flight to CUE: 45 min, $50–$80. Bus is ~8–10 hours — only practical if you want to spend time in Quito first.

Setup Steps
Search Google Flights or Skyscanner for your origin → GYE (Guayaquil). Set flexible dates around Dec 12–15 for the best rates.
Book the domestic GYE → CUE flight separately on latam.com or avianca.com. One-way is $50–$80.
For the return: book CUE → GYE (or CUE → UIO) + international leg. Target March 14th, 2027 departure to stay within 90 days.
If you arrive December 14th and leave March 14th, you are exactly at 90 days — no visa extension required.
Set a fare alert 4–6 months before departure. Prices to Ecuador tend to spike closer to December.
Consider booking a refundable or flexible fare if your dates aren't confirmed yet.
Common Mistakes
Booking a through-ticket instead of separate international + domestic legs. Splitting saves $100–$200 in most cases.
Flying into Quito and taking the bus to Cuenca without realizing it's 8–10 hours. If you want to go direct, fly into Guayaquil instead.
Waiting until November to book December flights. Ecuador is a holiday destination — prices rise significantly in Q4.
Not checking bag allowance on the domestic leg. LATAM domestic flights often include only carry-on — checked bags cost $15–$30 extra.
